Major Explorations: Black Studies

Welcome

Black Studies provides an interdisciplinary exploration into the histories and cultures of Black people in Africa and its diaspora. It is also an inquiry into the social construction of racial differences and how these differences perpetuate racism and racial domination.

Most Black Studies courses do not have prerequisites.  Black Studies courses draw on literature, philosophy, history and many other disciplines to examine African, African-American and Caribbean/Latin American themes.

First-year students interested in taking Black Studies courses are encouraged to take Black Studies 111 (Introduction to Black Studies) or any 100 or 200-level course. To learn more about the major, first-year students are encouraged to meet with the chair of the Department.

Transfer students interested in Black Studies are encouraged to meet with the chair of the Department.
