Oral History Interviews

Amherst College does not require the Institutional Review Board to approve Oral History Projects, but you still need to conform to good practices and make sure that the people you talk with give informed consent. Tell them that this conversation is part of research for a class project, that you may quote them but that you will not identify them by name and that the outcome from this project will not be published. We would advise you to use the contact numbers for the congregation you wish to visit to inform them that you are coming and your intention of talking with members of the congregation about their experiences, and to ask for suggestions about appropriate dress, etc.

Places of Worship

Clicking on the "W" link below will open a list of contact information for congregations in and near Amherst. We have gone somewhat further afield for religious groups that don't have houses of worship here. You should use the phone numbers to figure out how best to visit this place of worship, and you are welcome to do your ethnographic research with friends from either section.
