Sacred Images & Space First Writing Assignment

 

How would you define the sacred?  What definitions or characteristics are useful for talking about sacred space, sacred images or sacred objects?

 

Write a clear extended definition of the sacred and explain several examples of something that is sacred in both your own country and Japan.  What gives these objects an aura of sacrality?

 

You are not meant to do any research for this assignment but you may want to make reference to the readings by Freedberg and Eliade.
