CLASSWORK
There will be two sorts of classwork in the course:(I) Four problem sets, handed out at roughly equal intervals through the semester. Under no circumstances will late sets be accepted except in cases of dire personal emergency.(II) A large number of exceedingly brief writing and/or calculational exercises, to be done in class. There will be no advance warning about these exercises: I will almost certainly make them up on the spot, while class is in session. These will be immediately collected and graded on a pass/fail basis. Under no circumstances will I accept participation in athletic events as a valid reason to miss these exercises.GRADING POLICY
The final grade in the course will be the average of the grades of the four problem sets in (I), with the following exceptions:
-- if 2 or fewer of the brief exercises in (II) are failed, the final grade will be unchanged--
if 3 are failed, the final grade will be reduced by one point, for example from A- to B+--
if 4 are failed, the final grade will be reduced by two points, for example from A- to B--
if 5 are failed, the final grade will be reduced by four points, for example from A- to C+--
if more than 5 are failed, you will fail the course no matter what your grades were on the problem sets
