The study of a major author, literary problem, or question from the medieval period with a particular focus announced each time the course is offered. The topic for fall 2008 is Amor and metaphor; Romance in the era of Magna Carta. Readings will include works by Marie de France and Chrétien de Troyes, the Roman d’Eneas, the Tristan legend, and the Arthurian romances of the early thirteenth century. Special attention will be paid to the social upheaval of the period and the evolution of legal institutions under Plantagenêt dynasty. Readings, discussions and papers will be in English.
