Dans le polycopié du cours, lisez l’extrait de Charles Bernheimer, « Degas’s Brothels : Voyeurism and Ideology », pp. 157-195 (vous n’avez pas besoin de lire la fin de l’article, de la p. 195 à la p. 199, qui est sur Toulouse-Lautrec).
Répondez aux questions suivantes en français (mais vous pouvez bien sûr garder les citations du texte de Bernheimer en anglais) :
1. D’après les éléments biographiques contenus dans l’article, quelle impression avez-vous de la vie de Degas ?
2. A propos des images de femmes dans leur baignoire, Bernheimer oppose deux interprétations de Degas—l’une proposée par des écrivains comme Huysmans, d’une part, et l’autre défendue par des critiques d’art contemporains comme Eunice Lipton (pp. 168-170). Expliquez ce qui oppose ces interprétations.
3. Aux pages 185-89, Bernheimer explique que le voyeur qui regarde les monotypes du bordel en s’attendant à y trouver une jouissance érotique est déstabilisé. D’après Bernheimer, comment fonctionne cette déstabilisation ?
