This course focuses on the Welfare State, examining both the type of government transfer payments which provide social insurance and subsidies and also direct government provision of human services such as child care, education, health care and old age care. What are the achievements of the Welfare State? What problems has the Welfare State been facing during the last decades? What are the prospects for the Welfare State in the future? The course literature consists of journal articles dealing with these questions.
Requisites: Economics 53 or 57 and 54 or 58. Fall semester. Professor Kjulin.
