An important part of the Official Consensus is that conditions like major depressive disorder are DISEASES, not just unpleasant, painful, or troubling conditions. Critics have long argued that the term "disease" cannot rightly be applied to mental conditions. In 1998, HBO aired a debate on "Is Depression a Disease?" The "yes" side included Peter Kramer; the "no" side included Thomas Szasz, a long-time critic of the Official Consensus. I am providing a link to the debate transcript for those of you who are interested.
