Paul A. Schroeder Rodriguez (Section 01)
(Offered as SPAN 335, LLAS 335 and FAMS 324) Latin American documentary filmmaking in the twenty-first century has been at the forefront of global developments of the genre. In this course we will explore a wide range of films that together provide an overview of the immense diversity in topics, styles, and cultures that contemporary documentaries address. During the first half of the course we will collaboratively select the films in order to reflect students' particular interests while aiming to cover all six major cultural spheres in Latin America: Mesoamerica, the Andean region, the Caribbean, Amazonia, the Southern Cone, and the Latin American diaspora. During the second half of the course you will have time to develop and work on your final projects, which could be a videoessay, a written essay, or a creative documentary project that dialogues with a film or films seen in class. Conducted in Spanish.
Requisite: SPAN 301 or consent of the instructor. Fall semester: Professor Schroeder Rodríguez.
