Translating Contemporary French

This course aims at improving the students' knowledge of the contemporary French language and of contemporary French society through translation. We will draw from a wide variety of sources, such as fiction, poetry, film, songs, graphic novels and advertising, to gain a better understanding of idiomatic French and of the translation process. Some translation theory will be introduced, but the class will primarily focus on close readings and critical interpretations of sources.  Conducted in French.

Requisite: One of the following--FREN 207 or 208 or the equivalent. Limited to 18 students. Omitted 2022-23. Spring semester: Professor Katsaros.

How to handle overenrollment: Priority will be given to French majors, and then by seniority.

Students who enroll in this course will likely encounter and be expected to engage in the following intellectual skills, modes of learning, and assessment: Instruction in languages other than English, close readings, independent research, some creative work
