Our courses explore the science of the Earth—its physical makeup, its history and how it works. Geology at Amherst is not confined to classrooms and labs: field trips take students from the mountains to the beach.
Climate Change, Global Warming and Energy Resources
Examine the connection between climate dynamics and the Earth’s energy budget. Understand the extent to which humans are causing climate change, and what can be done to mitigate the effects.
Study the geometry and origin of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rock structures and focus on recognition and interpretation of structures through field and laboratory methodology.
Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology
Study igneous and metamorphic processes and environments and apply chemical principles and experimental data to igneous and metamorphic rocks. Also, identify, analyze and map rocks in the laboratory and field.
Summer Research Opportunities
There are abundant opportunities for students to do research with faculty in our department. These opportunities provide invaluable experience doing laboratory and field geology research.
