Our courses explore the science of the Earth—its physical makeup, its history and how it works. Geology at Amherst is not confined to classrooms and labs: field trips take students from the mountains to the beach.
Principles of Geology
This course focuses upon the earth as an evolving and dynamic system, providing students with an understanding of what is known about the earth and how we know it.
Study the geometry and origin of rock structures and focus on recognition and interpretation of structures through field and laboratory methodology.
Examine the principles of thermodynamics, with an emphasis on multicomponent heterogeneous systems used to study equilibria germane to the genesis and evolution of igneous and metamorphic rocks.
Summer Research Opportunities
There are abundant opportunities for students to do research with faculty in our department. These opportunities provide invaluable experience doing laboratory and field geology research.
