Amherst’s Geology Department collaborates with the geology departments at Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges and the University of Massachusetts, and with the School of Natural Science at Hampshire College to provide extraordinary experiences and special opportunities to geology students at all five institutions.

This collaboration mounts an annual distinguished lecture series, sponsors semi-annual field trips to exciting localities (recent trips have been made to Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, the Rio Grande Valley, and even Iceland), holds annual student and faculty research symposia, and provides for the sharing of research labs and research equipment (including sophisticated analytical instruments such as mass spectrometers, scanning electron microscopes, and seismographs)—all of which make a greatly expanded earth science community and a rich pool of scientific expertise.
