UMass Film: "Honor" ("Ehre")

UMass Amherst in Flavin Auditorium, Isenberg School of Management 137.

Berlin documentary filmmaker Aysun Bademsoy will present in person her 2012 film "Honor" ("Ehre". The film "Honor" is a sensitive observational documentary concerning teenage males, violence and the concept of honor in contemporary Berlin. In German with English subtitles, the film is free and open to the public; Q&A with the director to follow. An essay on the film by the director (in German) is found here.

Guests are also invited to two other opportunities to speak with the director: Barton Byg's graduate seminar on documentary, 2:30 - 3:45 in Herter 301 (UMass Amherst) and a "meet & greet" with coffee and refreshments, 4 - 5 p.m., also in Herter 301. All events are on Tuesday, 16 October 2012.

Bademsoy has been noted since the 1990s for her documentaries on young women in the Turkish-German community. One focuses on "The Wedding Factory," (2005) while several deal with young women and sports: "A Girl in the Ring" (1996) and a trilogy of films following young women from a girls' soccer team over almost two decades of their lives. Bademsoy has also collaborated on a wide range of media projects with others, such as Harun Farocki in documentaries and feature film director Christian Petzold.

In the film "Honor," Muhamad, a 16-year-old German-Palestinian, Christian, a 15-year-old German and Kevin, a 17-year-old German-Ganaian are taking part in anti-violence training. Every sentence, every false look is a cause for them to defend their reputation and honor. It's about the mothers, the sisters and the wives. The women's bodies are always at their disposal. This is the bargaining chip, the foundation of identity and a feeling of self worth for the young men. A search for an identity where it no longer exists. Anti-violence training in youth social services, midnight sports, on the streets -- Aysun Bademsoy searches such places for a definition of the concept of honor in Germany in the twenty-first century.

The event is sponsored by: German and Scandinavian Studies; Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies; Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies (UMass); German Studies, Mount Holyoke College; German Studies, Smith College; Department of German, Amherst College; Five College Women's Studies Research Center.
