German Film Series: "Vorspiel"

Vorspiel (Ready for Life, Peter Kahane, 1987; 90 min.)
Bittersweet comedy drama, set in East Germany in the 1980s. Tom, a shy 17-year-old, hangs out with his pals in a drab provincial town. When dashing Corinna and her father, museum director Dr. Lange, move into town from East Berlin, Tom enlists the help of all his friends to conquer the girl of his dreams. But he is in for a bunch of surprises. This film will be shown in German with English subtitles.
Screenings, with director Peter Kahane present for Q & A, are held in conjunction with, and with the generous support of, the U Mass DEFA Film Library's 2017 Artist-In-Residence Program.

German Chamber Music

An evening of German Chamber Music

Danish contralto Kristine Gether premieres a new set of songs by local composer and Amherst alumnus Gregory W. Brown with texts by Austrian painter Kurt Kramer. Other performers on the program include soprano Mary Hubbell, and pianist and composer Thomas Stumpf. In addition to the Kramer songs, Ms. Gether will sing selections by Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert, Ms. Hubbell will perform the Ophelia Songs by Richard Strauss, and Mr. Stumpf will play his own piano composition "The Spirit and the Dust.” Stumpf will also premiere a new piece by Brown with text by Wassily Kandinsky for piano with the composer narrating.

Location: Center for Humanistic Inquiry, Frost Library, 2nd Floor

Free and open to the public, with reception to follow
