Keefe Campus Center, Schwemm's Backroom

Genevive Rose Quartet performs with student combos Talking Book, Songs in the Key of Life and Christmas with the Jorts.

Schwemm's Coffeehouse will be swinging hard to the sounds of Amherst's own student combos and the professional groups with whom they will share the stage.

Each week features a pro group at 9 p.m. followed at 10 p.m. by two or three groups from Amherst's robust jazz combo program. This spring, the performances take place every Thursday, excluding spring break. The performance dates and groups are listed below. Don't miss the Genevive Rose Quartet this Thursday!

Conceived in 2007 by then-senior Alex Rodriguez '08, Jazz Performance Director Bruce Diehl and Professor Dominic Poccia, Jazz @ Schwemm's was designed to bring jazz into the thick of the Amherst campus. It's a win-win arrangement: the campus gets quality jazz music, professionals get a new gig opportunity, and student combos get to see the pros in action. “The kind of music [jazz musicians] do is learned by apprenticeship,” Poccia says. “It’s hard for students to get the courage for improvisation, and with Schwemm’s, students are encouraged to jump off the diving board and do it.”

Schwemm's is located in the Keefe Campus Center at Amherst College.
