The Amherst College Department of Music presents a concert of German Lied for tenor and fortepiano on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in Buckley Recital Hall in the Arms Music Center. The concert is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

The concert, entitled "Birth of the Lied," will track the development of German art song, from early pieces by C.P.E. Bach, through works of Mozart and Haydn, to excerpts from Franz Schubert’s song cycles. The highlight of the concert will be Beethoven’s seminal song cycle "An die ferne Geliebte." Amherst College music instructor, tenor Thomas Oesterling, is joined by Boston-based fortepianist Sylvia Berry. Ms. Berry plays a Viennese-style fortepiano built in 1995 by Chris Maene, based on a 1795 instrument by the master builder Anton Walter, the builder of Mozart’s piano in Vienna.

The concert features many sounds new even to the seasoned listener: songs less familiar than other works by the composer, and well-known songs revealing new and intriguing sonorities courtesy of the period keyboard.
