Gather & Release is a one-hour performance for vibraphone and a variety of pre-recorded sounds, composed by percussionist Sarah Hennies. Her work explores issues related to queer/trans identity, mediated through sound and music technologies.

Over the course of an hour, Hennies entangles highly focused percussion playing with field recordings, sine waves, signifiers from her personal and family history (including a 20+-year-old recording of her grandfather reciting poetry) and bilateral stimulation, a tool for anxiety release and a major component of EMDR therapy. (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy is a branch of psychotherapy that focuses on relieving the patient of disturbing memories.)

Gather & Release is personal, immediate, yet reserved.

Sarah Hennies will also give a presentation for students enrolled in MUSI 264 on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Please contact Yvette Jackson at yjackson@amherst.edu if you would like to sit in. Limited space is available.
