About the Amherst College Choral Society

The Amherst College Choral Society first began to materialize when the Glee Club was founded as an octet back in the spring of 1865. Today, Choral Society is made up of four different groups, the Glee Club, the Chorus, the Concert Choir, and the Madrigal Singers. We have toured to over 60 countries, and have an upcoming tour this spring to Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. We are directed by Dr. Arianne Abela and assistant conductor Ellen Mutter '18.

If you are interested in joining Choral Society, please email Dr. Abela at aabela@amherst.edu! We hold vocal placements in the beginning of each semester and take students from a wide range of singing backgrounds.

This season, we are especially excited to be working on repertoire from Baltic composers like Ēriks Ešenvalds, Veljo Tormis, and M.K Čiurlionis. We have premiered works by Colin Britt and Amherst Music Professor Eric Sawyer, have had masterclasses with Caroline Shaw and Stacey Gibbs, collaborated with Amherst Symphony Orchestra and presented a semi-staged production of Bizet's Carmen, and performed alongside renowned singer/songwriter Shara Nova!
