About the Amherst College Choral Society

The Amherst College Choral Society first began to materialize when the Glee Club was founded as an octet back in the spring of 1865. Today, Choral Society is made up of four different groups, the Glee Club, the Chorus, the Concert Choir, and the Madrigal Singers. We have toured to over 60 countries, and have just returned from our tour to Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. We are directed by Dr. Arianne Abela and assistant conductor Gil Wermeling '19.

This past season, we focused on repertoire from Baltic composers like Ēriks Ešenvalds, Veljo Tormis, and M.K Čiurlionis. We have premiered works by Colin Britt and Amherst Music Professor Eric Sawyer, have had masterclasses with Caroline Shaw and Stacey Gibbs, collaborated with Amherst Symphony Orchestra and presented a semi-staged production of Bizet's Carmen, and performed alongside renowned singer/songwriter Shara Nova! In the coming 2019-2020 season, we have collaborations with professional vocal ensemble Kaleidoscope, as well as world-premiere of works by Jerry Noble and Linda Kachelmeier. The Glee Club will be performing at Lincoln Center in January 2020.

If you are interested in joining Choral Society, please email Dr. Abela at aabela@amherst.edu! We hold vocal placements in the beginning of each semester and take students from a wide range of singing backgrounds. To sign-up for a vocal placement, CLICK HERE: http://bit.ly/AmherstChoralVocalPlacementNo need to prepare any solo pieces/arias. You will sing some scales with Dr. Abela, and sing some ear exercises and sight-singing. If you have no experience in these areas, do not worry. Just come!
