Year comes to a Close!

2001-2002 was a rousing success. Just a glimpse of the number of jazz-related events and pics will verify this. Jazz@Amherst wishes everyone luck as they finish off their studies and finals, and wishes everyone a safe and relaxing summer! New Jazz course Listed

2003 Williams Jazz Fest Dates announced

Andy Jaffe, former Director of Jazz Studies at Amherst, has announced the dates for the annual Williams Jazz festival as April 25-26, 2003. Traditionally Jazz Ensembles from Amherst and Smith make the drive to Williams College for this non-competitive event. Guest artists at next year's Fest have not been announced.

Pics of Diminished Nine Combo

Pictures from the Diminished Nine performance for Senior Citizens at the Bangs Community Center in downtown Amherst are up. Check in with the Combo page, link to the pics section and look for Diminished Nine from March 7, 2002. Needless to say, they played great and were enjoyed thoroughly by the seniors in attendance.

Jazz Combo to Perform at Bangs Community Center, Amherst

On March 8, 2:00pm, the Diminished Nine Jazz Combo will perform for the senior citizen community of Amherst at the Bangs Community Center. An "old-time" performance including such standards as "Misty", "Besame Mucho", "Feet's Too Big", and "Autumn Leaves" will bring the audience back to the days when this was the music that everyone listened to. The Frontroom was cookin' on Nov. 1 with the likes of Amherst Alumni bassist Stephan Crump ('94) and his friends from New York. Click here to check it out!

Amherst Jazz Ensemble to Perform at Williams Jazz Festival

On April 6, 2002, the Amherst Jazz Ensemble will perform and be adjudicated as part of the annual Williams College Jazz Festival. The performance time slot is 10:00am-11:00, immediately following a performance by the Smith College Jazz Ensemble, also directed by Bruce Diehl. Free admission to this event, and it is part of a weekend-long jazz extravaganza. The West-Coast based Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra will be the featured performing group. Check the Williams College website for more info on this concert as well as any part of the entire weekend.

Jazz Ensemble plays "What's New"

May 4, 2002 will find the AC Jazz Ensemble playing more music from the last twenty years than they have in the past five years. Tunes by Matt Harris, Fred Sturm, Chuck Mangione, Gil Evans, Pat Metheny, plus many more will be the main course. The Ensemble will be joined by soulful guitar legend, Joe LaCreta, giving us a different color and intensity. Concert is at 8:00pm, free admission in to Buckley.

Combos to Perform

The Campus Center Frontroom will light up on April 25 and May 2 for the end-of-year performances by the three Amherst College Combos. Both dates are Thursdays, both concerts start at 8:00pm, and both concerts are free. April 25 will feature our combo Quantum Gatherum, with special musical guests the UMASS Vocal Jazz Ensemble 1. On May 2, our combos Diminished Nine and the Jazz Ambassadors will perform.

Jazz Private Students to Perform

The students studying jazz in their private lessons will perform on Thursday, May 9, 8:00pm in the Campus Center Frontroom. They will be accompanied by various combinations of our Jazz Instructors, plus bassist Alec Derian and drummer Jon Fisher. Free admission, plus the chance to see/hear some great developing talent!

"It all Stems from This"....Saxophonist Emily Eynon Culminating Performance at Hampshire!

Longtime Amherst Jazz Ensemble and Combo member Emily Eynon will be giving her "Division Three" performance of self-composed music on April 13, 2002. Eynon, a Hampshire College student, aims to fill the recital hall at Hampshire with family and friends for this 8:00pm performance. Amherst student Ethan Greene will be featured on trumpet as well as another member of the saxophone section at Amherst, Chris Correa, also a Hampshire Fourth Year. Bassist Max Adam (playing in Amherst Combo-Quantum Gatherum), and two students from Music 36-Tito Ramsey and Ed Louis, round out Emily's ensemble.

Jazz Clarinetist Eddie Daniels to appear at Amherst

Friday, April 5, 2002, Jazz clarinetist Eddie Daniels will be at Amherst College to coach our combos. equally at home in the classical and jazz realms, Daniels brings a wealth of experience to our midst from 2:00-3:30pm, location tba.

Amherst Jazz Drum Instructor Claire Arenius

On Thursday, April 4, 2002, Claire Arenius brings to Buckley Auditorium her trio called C.E.T.(Eugene Uman on piano and Thomson Kneeland on bass) for an 8:00pm performance.

Amherst to host Magic Triangle Series

Due to upcoming renovations at the UMASS Bezanson Recital Hall, Amherst is fortunate to host all three of the jazz concerts affiliated with the Magic Triangle Jazz Series. Concerts will be at 8:00pm in Buckley on February 17, March 7, and April 3.

Ann Maggs and Dana Gooley to Perform in Buckley

On March 6, 2002, Jazz Voice Teacher Ann Maggs joins Amherst Valentine Professor Dana Gooley in a noontime recital of titles featuring the lyrics of Dorothy Fields. Free admission to this 12:15pm concert.

Dr. Lateef to be honored at Smith

Our Five College Professor Yusef Lateef will be the honored composer at a concert at Smith college on Feb. 16. As posted in the Smith website: February 16, 2002 Tribute to the Music of Dr. Yusef Lateef Events will include a panel presentation and performance. These events are sponsored by Afro-American Studies and the Office of Institutional Diversity. 12 Noon Stoddard Hall Auditorium Congrats to Yusef on this honor!

The students in the various Jazz Ensembles as well as their Director wish to thank Diane Diehl (formerly Diane Wagrowski) for her contributions as the official photographer of all our events. She has done a great deal of work in only a year, and we are thrilled to have her help in documenting our efforts! New pics taken by Diane are posted soon after each event, so please check in the combo and jazz ensemble folders frequently.

(posted 11/12/01) Jazz Ensemble and Diminished Nine Combo Tenor Saxophonist Adrienne Showler scored the game winning goal for the Amherst Women Soccer team's playoff victory in last weekend's (11/10/01) Sweet Sixteen playoffs. This win shot the team into the final four...a contest to be played in Ohio on Thursday, 11/15/01. Congrats to Adri, who, along with her AC jazz colleagues gave a winning performance at Buckley Recital Hall in their November concert on Sunday, November 11, 2001. Jazz Duo to Perform

Amherst students Brett Brehm (Piano) and Brian Hochman (Saxophone) will perform as a duo in the Campus Center Frontroom on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002. Concert time is 8:00pm, and is free of charge. These two are freshly-returned to Amherst from a semester abroad in London. We look forward to hearing what they have cooked up!
