Graduating Seniors

The "Home Stretch"

The Amherst groups head into the final weeks of our semester with much music to get done! The Jazz Ambassadors (one of our four combos) and the AC Jazz Ensemble will perform at the Williams Jazz Festival on Friday and Sat., April 25 and 26. We'll have a concert by Amherst jazz piano and jazz voice teachers Ann Maggs and Eugene Uman on Sunday, 4/27 at 4:00pm. This wonderful event will be followed immediately by a jam session in Valentine with Eugene Uman as the special guest. Open to all! Join us next week for activities involving our guest artist, Wayne Goins, as detailed below-all which culminate in a concert by the AC Jazz Ensemble on Friday, May 2 at 7:00pm. Our combos finish off this busy time with concerts on May 4 (7:00pm) and May 7 (8:00pm). Fasten your seatbelts and join us for this rapid-fire ride through the end of the semester!

For the end-of-semester concert (May 2), we will be joined by Dr. Wayne Goins, Associate Professor and Director of Jazz Ensembles at Kansas State University. Dr. Goins received his Ph.D. from Florida State University and is a guitarist equally schooled in the blues and jazz idioms. After teaching experience in Boston and Chicago, he relocated to Atlanta where he taught guitar and directed jazz ensembles at Morehouse College, Emory University and Kennesaw State University. Dr. Goins toured extensively throughout Europe for Ichiban Records, for whom he has recorded as a sideman on over twenty albums. He has performed music in Broadway Plays for August Wilson's Seven Guitars and Pearle Cleagge's Blues for an Alabama Sky. He continues to be an active participant in the field of music research, with numerous articles and presentations delivered at conferences across the United States.

We will welcome Dr. Goins for a dress rehearsal with the ACJE on Wednesday night, 9:00pm, and we will make sure that Wayne has plenty of time to hang with the many Five College guitarists on Thursday and Friday, May 1 and 2. We thank the Jazz @ Amherst funds and the Music Department for supporting Wayne's time with us!

New Concert Listing!

Ann Maggs and Eugene Uman, Amherst adjunct music faculty, will present a "Jazz on a Sunday Afternoon" vocal/piano concert on Sunday, April 27 at 4 p.m. in Buckley Recital Hall. Jamie Mcdonald, long-time Vermont Jazz Center bassist, will join Ann and Eugene. Free concert.

Jam Session at Valentine!

Amherst Jazz Piano teacher Eugene Uman will be the guest of honor at the end-of-semester Jazz Jam session taking place at Valentine Dining Commons on Sunday, April 24 (immediately following his appearance in Buckley with Ann Maggs and Jamie McDonald). We hope all students involved in jazz (in the many diverse ways) will bring their horns and their real books and join in the usual festivities of a jam session. Stay tuned for more "up to the minute" info. For those without music, we will have a bunch of books available for you.

Celebrating Women in Jazz at MHC

On March 7 and 8, Mt. Holyoke College will host a Jazz Festival celebrating women in Jazz. The headline group will be DIVA, the fabulous all-female jazz ensemble based in NYC. Mt. Holyoke's own Jazz Ensembles and Vocal Jazz Ensembles will be joined by the Smith College Jazz Ensemble on the following day, March 8, to showcase their own efforts in making this music great! Brett and Brian 1+1 Revenge

Brett Brehm (piano) and Brian Hochman (tenor saxophone) return to the stage of the Campus Center Frontroom for one last time....Sunday, March 2 at 8:00pm. Their duo jazz concert will feature their own music plus tunes by (safe bet) Wayne Shorter and Horace Silver. Do support the efforts of two classy individuals who have given much to the jazz program here at Amherst. (we all can hear about their performance in their weekly WAMH 89.3 FM radio show "Hear No Evil", broadcast Thursday mornings from 8:00-10:00am)

David Sanchez Group in Concert at Smith

Wednesday, Feb. 26 and 27 will find the David Sanchez Sextet in "residence" at Smith College. They will present a master class for all interested on Wed., 2/26 from 3-5pm in Sweeney Concert Hall. At 8:00pm on the same day, they will perform a *free* concert as part of the Marsalis Jam events. On the following day, 2/27, they will be guests in a forum hosted by the event coordinator and Smith Professor, Steve Waksman. Be sure to arrive early-seats are likely to go soon!

Jazz @ Amherst wants to thank Adam Mullinax and David Cyprian for their valuable website service over the semester. Doug Orbaker, the Jazz Ensemble Manager, was huge in his efforts, especially in setting up the concert on 12/06-so many thanks go Doug's way! Thanks also go to all the students involved in our many ensembles for a great semester of learning, growth as individuals and ensembles. The end of semester concerts were excellent examples of this process in action! Have a safe and relaxing break. Congrats to you as you finish up your semester.

Jazz Ensemble to Perform, Dana Gooley Guest!

Buckley Recital Hall will explode to the sounds of the Amherst College Jazz Ensemble on Friday, December 6 at 8:00pm. Dana Gooley (Valentine Professor of Music at Amherst) will be the featured guest artist at the piano. The group will bring out music by Ellington, Basie, Hooper, Diehl, Sperra, Niehaus plus much more! It's still a free concert, and we would love to have you share the music with us. Jazz Voice Students to Perform

On Tuesday, December 10, voice students of Ann Maggs will perform selections from the great American songbook. Please join them in Room 3 of the Arms Music Center for this free concert.

Amherst/Smith Vocal Jazz Teacher Ann Maggs to Perform

The first in a series of free noontime concerts in Buckley Recital Hall, Amherst College, will be presented on Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at 12:15 with Ann Maggs, jazz vocalist and music librarian, and Dana Gooley, jazz pianist and professor of music in "Love in the Dark: Songs from the Movies." The program will feature music by Harold Arlen, David Raksin, Henry Mancini, Michel LeGrand and others.

Ingrid Jensen Performed at Amherst

Ingrid Jensen and her combo with bassist Fraser Hollis and drummer John Wikan visited Amherst for two days. Check it out!
