The Amherst College Jazz Ensemble will perform its final concert of the academic year on Monday, May 2, 2005. This free concert starts at 8:00pm and takes place in Buckley Recital Hall, Amherst College. Featured on this program will be the world-premiere of an exciting new piece, City Scape written by Nathan Childers. This three-movement piece is the first in an annual series of works commissioned by and written for the Jazz Ensemble. We have titled the commission series The Robin McBride Jazz Commission Series, named after Robin McBride, AC Class of 1959, an ardent supporter of jazz efforts in performance and education at Amherst College. Works by noted composers Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Matt Harris, and several chestnuts associated with Frank Sinatra will be performed by the Jazz Ensemble in addition to the Childers piece.
Childers, a freelance saxophonist/composer/teacher and clinician for Yamaha currently on the scene in New York City and venues throughout New England, will be a featured soloist with the ensemble. Seniors who have been involved in any capacity in the jazz performance program at Amherst will be honored. For more information, please call the Jazz Ensemble Director, Bruce Diehl at (413) 542-8308.
