Symphony Orchestra

The AMHERST SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA consists of about seventy Amherst College students as well as up to ten musicians from the other schools of the Five College Consortium (the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith and Hampshire).  It is one of the only liberal arts college orchestras comprised entirely of students and presents three concerts per semester of conservatory-level repertoire, focusing primarily on late classical, Romantic, and the early twentieth century.  The orchestra also performs new music and world premieres, operas and musicals (both fully staged or in-concert), "pops" and film music, and annual events featuring Amherst College seniors as concerto soloists.  It aspires to perform at the level of a fine regional orchestra and offers its members the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of the finest (and often most exciting) works in the classical canon.
