Neuroscience

Some Typical Neuroscience Schedules

The course selections for the first three semesters in example (1) below are appropriate not only for prospective Neuroscience majors, but also for students who may wish to major in Biology, Chemistry, or Biochemistry & Biophysics, and also for students planning to complete premedical requirements while majoring in a non-science subject. Thus you can keep your options open for all of these possibilities by starting with Math 111 and Chemistry 151 or 155 in the first semester of the freshman year, and following schedule (1) during the next two semesters.

Note, if you need to start with Math 105 and thus take Chemistry 111 in the spring semester, you can still complete the Neuroscience major, including a senior thesis project if you choose—see schedule #4 below.

Also, Physics is included in these schedules, although it is not required for the Neuroscience major, because almost all Neuroscience majors do take physics, in order to have a strong science background and/or for the premedical requirement.

Sample Schedules

(1) This is a standard sequence for a student who majors in Neuroscience, but who wanted to keep the option open to major in Biology up through the first semester sophomore year, so he took Biology 181 in spring of first year, although it isn't required for the Neuroscience major.  It is also possible to reverse the sequence of Organic Chemistry and Physics, i.e. to take Physics in sophomore year and Organic Chem. in junior year.  The program below includes senior honors work.

Year Fall Spring
1 Chemistry 151 or 155
Math 111
2 non-science courses
Chemistry 161
Biology 181
2 non-science courses
2 Biology 191
Chemistry 221

(2) This student did not do a senior honors project, and so was able to spread out the requirements more than the student described above. They also opted to take the non-lab biochemistry course in the Fall of junior year (Chemistry 330), instead of the lab Biochemistry course (Biology 331) in the spring; this required adding an additional biology lab course to their program.
