“Intro to Machine Shop,” Sponsored by the Department of Physics & Astronomy

In this three-week interterm class students learn the basics of working with metal. They are introduced to the safe operation of metal lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders as well as other equipment, and learn the proper use of hand tools and precision measuring instruments.

The Machine Shop is available to students who wish to pursue projects involving custom equipment.  With milling machines, grinders, CNC machines, lathes and tons of tools, students have all the tools they need to create their own equipment.  The services of the shop are available to all students, faculty and staff, but if you really want to get involved and work the machines yourself, you should take the Machine Shop Course offered over Amherst's January Term.  This course trains students to use the machines available in the Student Machine Shop on their own.
