Welcome to the Peer Relationships Lab!

The Peer Relationships Lab is run by Dr. Julia D. McQuade, Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor of Psychology at Amherst College. Our lab conducts research examining the social experiences, behaviors, and peer relationships of children, adolescents, and young adults. Some individuals make friends easily, are accepted by peers, and are able to understand and respond effectively in social situations. However other individuals struggle in their relationships with peers; they may be teased or bullied, have trouble making friends, or have difficulty understanding what to do in different social situations. In our research we examine the cognitive, emotional, and environmental factors that may relate to these differences in social adjustment.

Some of our research focuses specifically on children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other research examines these processes in children or young adults in the general population. We conduct research by inviting individuals and families to the Peer Relationships Lab on the Amherst College Campus and also by conducting studies directly in local schools. Undergraduate Amherst College students play an integral role in the research we conduct and serve as research assistants and coordinators on the studies.
