We examine the rebels, deviants, dissidents and loners of Russian literature, and the interchange between art and politics, from the Russian Futurists to Pussy Riot. All of our literature and culture courses are taught in translation.
Modernism and Revolution
We will examine the revolutionary upheavals of early twentieth-century Russia through the lens of modernist texts.
Russia and the Representation of Race
This course focuses on the modes by which race has been represented in Russian and Soviet culture. We will examine how Russian and Soviet culture grappled with questions of race and how minorities found models to articulate their own experiences.
This course approaches pre-revolutionary Russian cultural history by attending to how key social actors have been represented in letters, memoirs, fiction, verse, painting and performance.
