History of the Collection

Alexei Remizov Albums and Suplementary Materials

1921-1940's

The collection was put together by Thomas Whitney separately from the Remizov Archive proper. Whitney collected the art materials at various times and from various sources, mostly in Paris. According to Mr. Whitney, "Most of the drawings, collages, and paintings in it were illustrations of Remizov's own stories or special themes or folk tales. Many were included in his manuscript, calligraphic 'albums' which he sold to his friends in Paris. They are remarkable creations of the imagination."

It was given to Amherst College in December, 2000, and transferred to the Amherst Center for Russian Culture in March, 2001.
