On View: "Songs of the City: Elena Guro and Artists of Her Time"

Exhibition space featuring works by Elena Guro and other artists

The exhibition on view, Songs of the City: Elena Guro and Artists of her Times, features works from the Mead Art Museum’s Russian art collection by figures such as Kazimir Malevich and Natalya Goncharova, as well as drawings by avant-garde writer and artist Elena Guro (1877-1913).

Elena Guro was the earliest of the “Russian Amazons,” the women who emerged as leading artists of the avant-garde in the pre-revolutionary period.  Guro also wrote experimental stories, poems and plays, making her the rare woman who contributed to the European avant-garde of the time.

The exhibition is curated by Nina Gourianova (Northwestern University). It will be on view through September 29, 2017.
