Instruction and choreography will include traditional West African vocabulary, Afro-Modern and West African hip-hop.

The class is open to all levels, open to the public and free of charge.

Madia W. Cooper holds an M.F.A. in dance performance and choreography from The College at Brockport, State University of New York, and a dance education degree from Brenau University, and is currently an instructor of dance at Middle Tennessee State University. She has performed at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Bill Evans Dance Co., Mawre African Dance and Drum Co., Sankofa African Dance Ensemble, Lake Eden Arts Festival (LEAF), Danscore, Gainesville Theater Alliance and Brenau Dance Ensemble. She has taught and choreographed at the Vanderbilt Summer Dance Intensive, New York Summer School of the Arts, The Atlanta Ballet Centre of Dance Education, American College Dance Festival, The Dancers’ Studio and the Gainesville Ballet Summer Intensive Residency. Along with teaching, she has had the opportunity to perform work by Bill Evans, Kofi Mawuko, Robert Battle, Carolyn Adams, Donald McKayle, Cleo Parker Robinson, Dianne McIntyre, Chet Walker, Darwin Prioleau, Habib Iddrisu, Larry Keigwin, Telly Fowler and Sherry Zunker.

The class is sponsored by the Sexuality, Women's and Gender Studies Department and the Lucius Root Eastman 1895 Fund.
