  Shadow of\nDiagnosis: Psychiatric Power and Queer Life._\n[https://press.

 e mid-20th century\, psychiatrists diagnosed\nhomosexuality and gender var
 iance as mental disorders that they\nclaimed to be able to treat and “cu
 re.”  That stigmatizing\ndiagnosis sanctioned larger structures of disc
 rimination and cast a\nstigmatizing pall over gay men\, lesbians\, and gen
 der non-conforming\npeople for decades. It also granted psychiatrists trem
 endous\nauthority\, underwriting their collaborations with the US state an
 d\nstrengthening its carceral apparatus.  Drawing on a collection of\npre
 viously unexamined case files\, Kunzel explores the significance of\nthe e
 ncounter between psychiatry and queer and gender-variant people.\n\nFree a
