Spanish Volunteer Opportunities

Have you ever thought about traveling to South America or volunteering abroad? Does the current pandemic make you eager to start planning your next adventure once travelling is safe again? Here is your chance to do both at the same time.  Hands on Peru is an amazing program that lets you get hands on experience in the medical field while having the time of your life in a foreign country experiencing everything Peru has to offer.

My name is Sommer Mitchell (email address: sommera@live.unc.edu). I am a Volunteer Coordinators for HANDS ON PERU. 

Come volunteer in Trujillo, Peru this upcoming winter or summer break with Hands On Peru! We have three programs, volunteering in the medical clinic, teaching English to schoolchildren, and building homes for the most needy.  Medical classes will be provided to those volunteering in the medical clinics, therefore no previous experience is required. You will be staying in home stays with Peruvian families to fully immerse yourself into their beautiful culture.

This trip is the perfect combination of humanitarian work and fun while also refining your Spanish speaking and medical skills. The Law Library of Congress invites you to participate in our next event for our crowdsourcing campaign, Herencia: Centuries of Spanish Legal Documents.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and the launch of the second phase of documents, we are hosting an all-virtual Transcribe-a-thon all day on October 7, 2020. Beginning at 8:00 a.m. EDT, participants are encouraged to transcribe, review, and tag documents from the collection, which contains print and manuscript documents from Spain from the 15th through the 19th centuries. Phase 2 comprises another third of the total collection and will include seven new projects for a total of nearly 900 additional unique documents in Spanish, Latin, and Catalan. With this second phase, transcribers and reviewers can expect to see many projects from the Briefs and Notarial Instruments subsections of the collection, which include a range of documents dealing with criminal cases, family and domestic matters, ecclesiastical law and jurisdiction, and tax collection.

Considering these current times where most of us are still working remote, we encourage you share this with colleagues, students, and patrons and transcribe a page on October 7. Transcription work will help improve access to our unique collection of historic Spanish legal materials through the Library’s crowdsourcing platform, By the People (BTP). BTP is a virtual volunteering website where anyone with an internet connection can transcribe digitized Library collections to improve discoverability and use while engaging deeply with the materials. After these transcriptions go through the review process, they will live on our website to facilitate discovery for researchers, academics, and the general public.
