When people learn a second language, it is not uncommon for them to be discouraged. Professor Sánchez-Naranjo’s great passion is understanding difficulties language learners experience and find optimal ways of making second language learning effective. She knows that no single approach is the right one for every learner, and so she uses her strong background in both first and second language acquisition and teaching, to help language learners develop as fully proficient language users in the 21st century.

In her research and teaching, Professor Sánchez-Naranjo applies insights from psycholinguistics, bilingualism, and usage-based linguistics. Her research experience involves the study of structural descriptions of languages, the study of social uses of language, and the study of language acquisition and teaching. As an experienced teacher and as a native of Colombia, she focuses on the conviction that living in a diverse culture requires a continual reflection upon the ways we engage with the world. In this sense, it is imperative for her to continuously assess her interaction with students and seek effective ways to stimulate learners’ engagement. Professor Sánchez-Naranjo has published several articles on different Colombian, Canadian, Brazilian, and American academic journals.
