• Up to five relevant courses may be taken outside of the Theater and Dance Department and counted toward the major with prior approval of the major’s advisor. These courses may be taken at any of the Five Colleges and/or during Study Away. However, the 100-level course in collaboration and improvisatory techniques, and at least one course at every other level, must be from Amherst College Theater and Dance Department offerings.

  • The 100-level course in collaboration and improvisatory techniques (such as THDA 110) must be taken before declaring the major. However, other 100 or 200 level courses may be taken prior to that.

  • Courses designated with an “H” are worth 2 credits. Any number of "H" courses in the department may count toward the major as long as all other major requirements are met; however, only 4 such courses can be counted toward your college degree (including "H" courses in other departments).

  • Transfer students may apply up to four relevant courses taken at a previous institution to their major requirements provided that those courses are similar to the kinds of courses generally taught in the department. The major’s advisor must approve any such courses towards fulfilling the major.

  • The department places no restriction on how many courses taken in theater and dance may be used to fulfill the requirements of some other major at the college.

  • Only one or two Senior Honors course(s) may be taken for honors Work and must be in addition to the 11-course requirement of the major.  Honors work in Theater and Dance is optional and must be approved by the department in advance.  Majors wishing to pursue Honors must complete all production service requirements by the end of their junior year.  Additional requirements for Honors eligibility can be found here.

  • Production service requirements must be completed in a departmentally produced project, or in an approved show at one of the other Five Colleges. Students wishing to receive academic credit for production service must make that choice by the end of the Add/Drop period in the semester in which they serve — academic credit may not be granted in a subsequent semester.  Assignments for production service are determined by department faculty and staff, so students should inquire about opportunities for upcoming semesters well in advance.
