As of fall semester 2011, Amherst College adopted the current three digit course numbering system. Prior to that time, course numbers were two digits.

The new numbering system assists students in determining the level of preparedness expected for each course, but may not apply to all departments. The system is described as follows:

100-Level Introductory or introductory sequence courses.

200-Level Courses above the introductory level.

300-Level Courses which require some preparation or pre-requisite, upper level seminars.

400-Level Courses at a level requiring departmental expertise or experience, upper level departmental  major requirements and seminars.

Courses within the numbering system described above:

290, 390, 490 Special Topics

498/499 Thesis courses
