As of fall semester 2011, Amherst College adopted the current three digit course numbering system.  Prior to that time, course numbers were two digits.

The new numbering system now assists students in determining the level of preparedness expected for each course.  The system is described as follows:

100-Level Courses           Introductory or introductory sequence courses.

200-Level Courses          Courses above the introductory level.

300-Level Courses          Courses which require some preparation or pre-requisite, upper level seminars.

400-Level Courses           Courses at a level requiring departmental expertise or experience, upper level departmental  major requirements and seminars.

290, 390, 490                       Special Topics Courses within the numbering system described above

498/499                              Thesis courses.
