It is not necessary to use SCUBA to participate in this program, and many students choose to snorkel instead. However, if a student wishes to use SCUBA, she/he must be certified before arrival.  Divers and snorkelers must bring their own SCUBA and snorkeling equipment. Weights and tanks are provided on-site at no cost.

Middlebury School in Uruguay: Montevideo

Montevideo, Uruguay

Based in Montevideo, students enroll directly in one of three host universities and take classes alongside Uruguayan students.  Montevideo is a few hours from Buenos Aires and a city of 3 million people - a great alternative to Buenos Aires for a student who wants an urban experience but with less study abroad students and tourists.

Please note that Spanish majors who want to receive the full three possible credits from study abroad for the major will only study at the Universidad de la República, where literature classes are taught.

Students who wish to conduct research abroad may submit a proposal to Middlebury to receive a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Aided students interested in Mellon funded research during the semester should consult with the financial aid office.

Students interested in petitioning this program must have a demonstrated interest in Caribbean Studies and/or festival arts.  Please see the Director of International Experience if you are interested in petitioning this program.

The host institution is the University of the West Indies.  Students cannot participate in the internship course for credit since Amherst does not award credit for internships.  Rather, students much do an independent study project.

The spring semester is preferred, as that is when Carnival is and the program focuses on festival arts.

CIEE Amsterdam: Social Sciences

Only the Social Sciences program is approved.  Students are expected to take a Dutch language which will be taught at the University of Amsterdam’s Dutch language department (INTT).  Students can enroll in Dutch courses at any level and the courses run for 8 weeks (45 contact hours) for which CIEE will recommend 3 U.S. credits per course.

You must receive credit from Spelman College, the school of record for CIEE programs.
