CIEE Paris

Paris, France

This Contemporary French Studies program through CIEE is focused on giving you a clear understanding of the political, social, and cultural complexity that characterizes contemporary France. In addition, you will take a 3 credit French Language course (level to be determined based on proficiency) with the goal of helping you achieve substantial, measurable improvement in your French language skills. This unique two-track program offers quality academic content for both beginners and intermediate students, tailored to fit your particular interests and abilities. Outside of classroom time, extracurricular activities and group excursions are organized throughout the semester. You will take neighborhoods walks and bike tours, and attend exhibits, film festivals, music and dance performances, and lectures. There are also day and weekend trips to areas of interest in and around the city.

A list of courses in English can be located on the CIEE Contemporary Studies in Paris website. In addition to a language course and electives during the semester, you will receive 3 credits for the language course during the orientation period. As per Amherst College academic policy, only liberal arts courses can be taken for credit (e.g. Intercultural Communication is not a liberal arts course, so would have to be taken above and beyond a full load of liberal arts courses).

Please apply online and see the flyer for more information. Cost for spring 2015 is $20,350 and Amherst financial aid can be applied to the fee. Dates are January 3 - May 9, 2015.

University of Oxford

Oxford, England

Amherst College has a special direct enrollment option for students with New College, University of Oxford.  Students must have a 3.7 to be considered; please see Study Abroad at New College for more information and how to apply.

Students may apply to study another college at Oxford directly, too, or through either program provider Arcadia or IFSA-Butler.  While there is some overlap in the colleges these providers affiliate with at Oxford, some colleges have unique partnerships with individual providers.  Please check their websites accordingly.  Students may study for the full year or for the two spring terms.  Please note that the fall term is too short to receive a full semester's worth of Amherst credit. (Be mindful when you search for programs at Oxford that there are other program providers that do not offer full visiting student status at Oxford colleges and that in general, these are not approved and have to be petitioned.)

Students will have a primary and secondary tutorial, they need not be in the same subject but please note that tutorial options depend on availability of faculty in each college. Not every subject is available at every college. Please see the Oxford or program provider website for details.

Additionally, St. Catherine's College at Oxford University is particularly interested in hosting qualified Amherst students for the full year (preferred) or two spring terms.  Students apply directly through St. Catz and become full members of the college.

Please refer to the handout below for more information on how you can study abroad to Oxford (and Cambridge University).
