Sweet Briar Junior Year in France: Paris

Paris, France

Students take courses specifically for Sweet Briar College in France students, but also take courses in the arts, humanities, and the social sciences at local universities that are partnering with the program. For a list of partner universities, visit the website.

Students participating in the fall semester will receive credit for the orientation course and therefore take four courses during the semester. 

Students attending in the spring semester do not receive credit for the orientation course (it is only one week and not credited by Sweet Briar) and therefore must take five courses during the semester.

Students must receive credit through the University of Rochester, the school of record for IES.  Only the French Studies program is approved.  Students take courses taught specifically for IES program students, but may also enroll at one of several university partners in Paris.

You are strongly encouraged to live with a host family rather than with program students, since the home stay provides greater immersion to the French language and culture.

Hosted by Humboldt Universität, Freie Universität and Technische Universität.  Only the Language & Area Studies program is approved for Amherst College credit.  IES allows direct enrollment at the host universities as well as IES-taught courses.  Amherst strongly encourages you to take courses at one or both of the host universities.

Students must receive credit through the University of Rochester, the school of record for IES.  Students are welcome to participate in the internship program but will not receive credit for the course. 

German majors must consult with the department for credit in the major.
