Trinity-in-Trinidad

Students interested in petitioning this program must have a demonstrated interest in Caribbean Studies and/or festival arts.  Please see the Director of International Experience if you are interested in petitioning this program.

The host institution is the University of the West Indies.  Students cannot participate in the internship course for credit since Amherst does not award credit for internships.  Rather, students much do an independent study project.

The spring semester is preferred, as that is when Carnival is and the program focuses on festival arts.

IFSA-Butler Language and Cultural Studies in the Yucatán

The host institution, ranked the top public university in Mexico, is the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán in Mérida, the lively capital of the Yucatán peninsula.  Spanish majors must consult with the department for credit in the major.

The is a required one-month orientation to prepare students for the challenges of rigorous academic work in a foreign language and culture.  Amherst students will not receive credit for the orientation course, and must take at least 15 semester credit hours of courses when they directly enroll at the Universidad de Costa Rica.  Spanish majors may receive credit in the major, see the department website for more information.  Only this advanced language program is approved.

Middlebury School in Spain: Madrid

All courses are taught at Sede Prim, the undergraduate and graduate school for Middlebury in Madrid.  Spanish majors may receive credit in the major, see the department website for more information.

Students who wish to conduct research abroad may submit a proposal to Middlebury to receive a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Aided students interested in Mellon funded research during the semester should consult with the financial aid office.

Level II Advanced Language and University Studies program is for students with proficiency in Spanish.  If enrolling for the fall semester, all courses will be taken at the Instituto Internacional en España.  If enrolling in the spring semester or full academic year, courses can be taken at the Instituto and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM).  Amherst does not award credit for internships, therefore students interested in participating in the internship program must take it in addition to a full course load.  Spanish majors must consult with the department for credit in the major.
