Intent to Study Away 2014-2015

Submission of this form will notify the College that you are planning to take an educational leave during Fall 2014, the 2014-2015 Academic Year, or Spring 2015. Should you change your mind and decide not to study away (overseas or at another U.S. institution), it is your responsibility to notify the Director of Education Abroad as soon as you have made this decision. It is strongly recommended that you meet with Dean Janna Behrens, to review your plans.  Her open hours are Mondays 2-3:30pm and Fridays from 2:30-4pm during the semester or you can call x2265 to make an appointment.  The "Steps to Study Abroad" meetings are held each Friday at 2pm in the Career Center.

These are firm deadlines, no exceptions.

  • Friday, March 15, 2014 for Fall 2014 or Academic Year 2014-2015
  • Monday, April 15, 2014 for Spring 2015

Before submitting this form, you must have declared your Academic Major to the Registrar's office (which may take up to 48 hours to process). If you have not declared your academic major(s) before submitting this form, we cannot process your Intent. You MUST also meet with your academic advisor to discuss how studying away fits into your Amherst education.

IMPORTANT: Please do not submit this form until you have declared your major to the Registrar's office. Otherwise, we will notify you that we cannot process this form until you have done so.

How is your study abroad program relevant to your Amherst academic experience (e.g. senior thesis preparation, language study, courses abroad that relate to your major)?  If you do not anticipate taking courses related to your major, how does your intended study abroad experience fit into your larger academic goals?  Please be specific; there is no need comment broadly on the benefits of studying abroad since we assume you have already embraced these if you are considering a semester or year away.
