What is the Saint Andrew’s Scholarship?

Since 1956, the Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York has provided over 185 scholarships to promote cultural interchange and goodwill between Scotland and the United States. In recognition of the benefits of higher education, the Society provides significant funding for two Scottish graduate students annually to study in the United States and three Scottish-American students to study at the graduate level at any university in Scotland.

Who is eligible?

Senior undergraduates who will have obtained a bachelor's degree by the spring; U.S. citizens with some Scottish descent (must have proof of both); demonstrated financial need shown by certification from a college official (financial services) that assistance would be needed to pursue graduate study in Scotland (this is based on having received financial aid at AC); clarity of purpose in pursuing graduate study, and study in Scotland in particular; a strong academic record preferably with distinguishing work in your major field of study; a demonstrated commitment to extracurricular activities; and qualifications that enable you to be a good ambassador of the U.S. Finalists must furnish proof of having applied to their selected school in Scotland.

How much funding is awarded and how can I use it?

The Macmillan-Saint Andrew’s Society Scholarship currently provides funds to a total of $35,000 to be used initially against tuition, then board, transportation and other expenses.

What is Saint Andrew’s history and mission?

On November 19, 1756, a small group of native-born Scots and Scottish Americans met in lower Manhattan to form what is now the oldest established charitable organization in the Empire State — Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York. The Society has grown considerably over the last two and one half centuries from those few Colonial gentlemen to over 500 women and men of Scottish blood, residing in all regions of the tri-state area and beyond. For over 250 years the Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York has provided charitable relief, academic sponsorship, community and identity to the natives of Scotland and their descendants. As one of the oldest not-for-profit organizations in the country, the Saint Andrew’s Society celebrates Scottish heritage and tradition through fund-raising and other social events, fostering the good will, understanding and communication between the people of the New York region (includes Amherst) and the people and leadership of Scotland.

Information for Recommendations

Please comment on the candidate's fitness for the course of study proposed and the suitability of the university chosen (why their studies and proposed career would be best served by studying at a Scottish university). Observations about the candidate's general character and ability to be a good ambassador for the U.S., as well as academic standing and ability are important to the Saint Andrew’s Scholarship Selection Committee. Format and submission: Letters have no word limit but should be on letterhead and signed and sent as a pdf. For the internal review (when the Amherst Committee on Student Fellowships reviews the application), recommenders are asked to send their letters to Christine Overstreet by November 1, 2023. If the candidate is chosen as the Amherst nominee, we will request a hard copy.
