Funds for Student Research Expenses

Students may request up to $1000 to pay for expenses related to thesis research, independent projects, and special topics research during the school year. Eligible expenses include: short-term travel, reasonable purchases/rental of equipment, lab, art, and other supplies, scanning, printing, and copying expenses. (Purchase of books and routine supplies equivalent to the usual costs of a regular course are not eligible). Research may take place on or off campus.

Summer Research Opportunities on Amherst’s Campus

Amherst’s Gregory S. Call Summer Research Program and SURF Fellows Programs both offer opportunities to conduct research on campus, and provide a weekly stipend, plus on-campus housing.

Gregory S. Call Summer Research Program Fellowships

For Amherst College students who pursue an immersive research project for 6 weeks during the summer. To apply, students submit a research proposal (in any discipline, including the social sciences, humanities, arts, and sciences) and enlist a faculty mentor.

SURF Fellowships

For Amherst College students who pursue an immersive research project for 6 weeks during the summer in environmental studies, biology, chemistry, biochemistry/biophysics, physics, geology, neuroscience, psychology, mathematics, or statistics. This is a competitive program that places students in labs of faculty investigators conducting original research.
