William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Philosophy | Director of the Writing Center | Director of the Teaching and Learning Collaborative | Humanist Advisor
I’ve been teaching in the Philosophy Department of Amherst College since 1989. Good philosophical writing, like all good writing, expresses and then argues for (or, in some other way, leads the reader toward) the author’s significant and hard-won insight. Because skillful writers are sensitive to readers’ needs and can anticipate their likely responses, their writing literally moves their readers to see the world in a new way. Many of my philosophy students have found that I can help them to transform their glimmers of insight into intellectually compelling prose. My hope is that through my work at the Writing Center, I can offer this assistance to the entire college community.
