Writers need readers. Speakers need to be heard.

At the Writing Center, students engaged in writing, reading, and public speaking may consult with a staff of professional writing and speaking associates. At any stage in your creative and intellectual process, associates can share strategies, offer feedback, and coach on revision and presentation. Writing Center services are open to all current Amherst College students and to Five-College students in support of their work for Amherst College classes.

Consultations

Meet with a writing associate to discuss a specific writing project, such as a class assignment, honors thesis, application essay, or creative writing project. We also offer sustained instruction on aspects of the writing process, reading strategies, support for multilingual writers, and writing counseling to address mental obstacles to effective writing.

In the Writing Center, students learn to interpret prompts, brainstorm ideas, develop arguments, organize, and revise with our support. Consultations are available six days a week, face-to-face or on Zoom.

Public Speaking

Meet with Susan Daniels to plan, revise, and rehearse your presentation, or to learn strategies for relaxing and gaining confidence in front of a live audience.
