All writers need readers, and all speakers need an audience. At the Writing Center, a professional staff of writing and speaking associates is eager to listen to your ideas and help you get them across with greater ease and clarity. We work with students on any writing or speaking project, at any stage in the process. Writing Center services are available to all Amherst College students and to Five College students in support of their work for Amherst College classes.

One-on-One Appointments

Writing: Meet with a writing associate to discuss a specific writing project, such as a class assignment, honors thesis, application essay, or creative writing project. We also offer sustained instruction on different aspects of the writing process, support for multilingual writers, and writing counseling to address mental obstacles to effective writing. Associates can help students interpret prompts, brainstorm ideas, develop arguments, organize, and revise. Make a writing appointment using our online scheduler.

Public Speaking: Meet with Susan Daniels to plan, revise, and rehearse your presentation, or to learn strategies for relaxing and gaining con dence in front of a live audience. Make an appointment with Susan by email

Workshops

The Writing Center offers workshops to help students build skills and gain confidence in academic, professional, and creative writing, as well as in public speaking. Check our Workshops and Events page for current offerings.

Write-Ins

The Writing Center hosts regular Write-Ins for First-Year Students and for Thesis Writers, plus a campus-wide event during Reading Period. Write-Ins help to create a supportive environment conducive to productive writing and reading in community. (And we always have great snacks and plenty of coffee!)

Thesis Support

We offer guidance, support, and feedback from the very beginning to the triumphant end.  We offer:

  • workshops designed for thesis writers on getting started, organizing your research, and revising your work.
  • a Thesis Retreat during vacation breaks where writers learn about, and practice, good habits for productive writing.
  • individual appointments to discuss organization, time management strategies, individual chapters, and other aspects of the thesis writing process.
