Amherst requires any applicant whose first language is not English to submit the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a similar English-proficiency test (International English Language Testing System - IELTS; or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery - MELAB) with the following exceptions:
English proficiency testing is not required of international students who:
- have conducted their entire secondary education at a school with English as the primary language of instruction;
- have taken the SAT and scored 700 or above on the Critical Reading section;
- have taken the ACT with Writing and scored 32 or above on the Reading section.
For international applicants required to submit evidence of English language proficiency, we recommend the following minimum scores: a minimum score of 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, a minimum score of 250 on the computer-based TOEFL; a minimum score of 100 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT); a minimum overall band score of 7.5 for the IELTS; or a minimum final score of 84 on the MELAB.
