Admission

Andrew Knox '16

Greetings! My name is Andrew Knox. I am a freshman from Palos Verdes Estates, a stones throw away from the beautiful beaches of Southern California. Although I grew up near the beach, I’ve never been much of a surfer, focusing on football instead, and am now a wide receiver for the Lord Jeff football team. Amherst was my first choice. If I had to go back and make the decision all over again, I would choose Amherst again in a heartbeat.

I plan to double major in Political Science and Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought, but I have plenty of time to figure that out! In addition to my studies I am also a Big Brother with the Big Brother Big Sister Program of Hampshire County, I work in the CONNECTIONS after school program in Holyoke, and I am also a tutor for A Better Chance.  What you will notice very quickly is that I am terrible with technology!  I am new to blogging so I'm not great with all of the picture attachments and stuff like that.  There is a picture of me on this blog post just click the attachment. Just kidding that didn't work.  I asked Morgan how to do the photo uploading and now my blog should be fully functional as of March 28th!

I thoroughly enjoyed my first Fall at Amherst and am looking forward to experiencing the full range of seasons and making memories in Massachusetts. Please email me with any questions, thoughts, or concerns that you may have at  aknox16@amherst.edu

Summer time!

Sorry it has been such a long time since I last blogged!  I was completely bogged down with school and I just totally forgot.  Forgive me!!

I can't tell you how nice it is to finally be done with all of my schoolwork.  I am sure that everyone will have the same feeling when they finish school too.  I finished my 40 pages of writing and took my Econ final on fumes.  I don't understand how people go through Finals on no sleep.  I was getting 6 or 7 hours of sleep and still felt bad about it, but I knew plenty of people who only got a couple of hours of sleep a night.

Anyways, it is so nice to finally be home and see family.  The weather here in Southern California is so beautiful and warm and its so nice to get some sunshine!  Its also great to see the family and catch up with them.

I have had an awesome time with my friends thus far too.  The other night a good friend and I went to a speech that Michael Phelps gave.  Here is picture of the two of us.  Here is the picture!

I hope everyone is having a great end of the year!  Feel free to email me with any questions and have a great summer!!

Mackelmore

Mackelmore was unreal.  Pro ably the most fun I have had in a long time.  He was the coolest artist I have ever seen live.  If anyone has the chance to go see him live you have to go see him!  I've seen some people that aren't as good live, but he lived up to expectations and more.

Springtime has been really nice.  It's kind of hard to focus on schoolwork when it is so beautiful outside, but it has to be done.

The other night the school threw an event on the quad in front of Val and had different cuisines from all over the world and had a live band and circus performers.  The fire twirlers were really cool, but the people on stilts freaked me out for some reason.  They really stressed me out!  I thought one of them was going to fall!

This afternoon we have our football BBQ to celebrate the end of the spring lifting period.  We finished our testing for our maxes this week and it feels great to see all of our hard work pay off!

Tomorrow the school is throwing the first annual Farm Fest.  Amherst recently created a farm on campus that will provide some of the produce that the students eat everyday in Val.  They are having a big BBQ and are going to have live entertainment.

It should be a lot of fun!  For all of the seniors congratulations on choosing the college or university you will be attending next year!!  And for the juniors, I hope all the AP and SAT testing is going well and your time to choose your school is closer then you think!

Had to go with the floral shorts.

Spring Time

I hope everyone is well!  I hope everyone on the East Coast is enjoying the warm weather as much as I am.  For those of you on the West Coast, I’m sure you have had warm weather this entire year.  I’ve got to say that coming from California and being use to good weather all the time; the beginning of spring has really made me appreciate good weather.  It was in the 70s for the first time yesterday and it felt amazing!

It was really nice because I am working for a former professor with some of his yard work and it was great to sweat a little outside in the warmth.  I can’t tell you how long its been since I have had that feeling!  He is a really nice man and it is great to meet someone who has been apart of the Amherst community for such a long time.

This week has flown by because my football workouts are much shorter because we are about to test our maxes next week.  This means I have some time to go back to sleep for a little while and have a more relaxed day.  I also don’t have a ton of work that is due in the near future which means I have caught up on my rest.  Badly needed!

Although I don’t have a ton of work due in the near future, I have 35 pages worth of final papers and an Econ final due by May 18th.  Doesn’t sound like a ton, but I just realized that for one of my 10 page papers I need to read two books totaling over 700 pages and I haven’t started them.  Looks like I am going to have a lot of reading to do!

I also realized that I need to do most of my research for a 15-page paper on Maoism in Nepal.  I have definitely taken it a little too easy in terms of schoolwork the past couple weeks.  And I’m not exactly sure when all of this work is going to get done!

This weekend promises to be one of the most fun weekends of the year!  Spring formal is tomorrow night, which is going to be under a big tent on the quad in front of the dining hall.  From what I’ve heard everyone gets dressed up in formal wear and dances and has a great time.  Then Saturday night we are having our spring concert.  We are having Mackelmore!  All of my friends from other schools who have already had him come have said he is incredible live.  It should be a really fun night.  Pictures to come next week!

Here is a link to one of his albums if you aren’t familiar with his music:

I hope the end of everyone’s school year is going really well.  As always, if anyone has any questions for me send me an email!

Admitted Students Weekend

Hey!  I hope everyone had a great week.  I don’t know about anyone else, but I am definitely starting to feel the stress as the year winds down.  We only have a month left of school and I am just starting to realize how much work I have to get done!  I have to start writing a 15-page paper on Maoism in Nepal, a shorter 4 page and 10-page paper for my history class and another 10-page paper for my Legal Institutions and Democratic Practices class and then an Econ final.  At least I’m not the only one who has a ton of work to do.

It’s also admitted students weekend so there are a ton of people on campus.  There is definitely a ton of excitement seeing a bunch of kids that will be coming here next year.  I really wish I had gone last spring!  I was talking with some of my friends and they said they met a bunch of people last year when they went and that it was a ton of fun.  I would definitely recommend it!

This weekend has been one of my favorites so far (other then the hail on Friday).  Saturday I picked up my Little Brother (not my real little brother, my little brother from the program) along with another pair and we went to Antonio’s and then to this ice cream shop called Flavors.  Literally the coolest place of all time.  They make their own ice cream with the milk they produce (forgot to mention Flavors is on a dairy farm) and it really creamy and unbelievably good.  Definitely a great food day.  We went to the Amherst vs. Tufts lacrosse game because Kaleb is a big lax fan.  Tufts is one of the best teams in the nation which was cool to watch, and even though Amherst lost it was still a lot of fun for all of us.

Here is a picture of the pizza from Antonio's.  It is unreal.  Defintely a must if you visit Amherst.

This is the link to the ice cream place.  A really cool story.  Also deffinitely worth the trip.

Last night was the women’s tennis formal, which was a lot of fun.  I went to the women’s swim formal the night before and it was a lot of fun to get dressed up and everything.  They were a ton of fun, but that’s probably why I am so tired today!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

National Championship!

This was one of the most fun weeks I have had here at Amherst!  Today the men’s basketball team won the national championship, which is absolutely insane.  They killed it!

Everyone on campus is extremely proud of the guys and can’t wait to welcome them back!

Here is a link to an article that ESPN wrote.  Enjoy.

Other then watching the men’s team win the national championship it was a pretty busy week.

The weather is still trying to figure out when to warm up which is a little frustrating.   I went to Washington DC for the weekend and it was absolutely beautiful.  The cherry blossoms were just about to bloom and the weather was fantastic.

The trip was a little business and a lot of time seeing friends I haven’t seen in years.  I crushed my interview for an internship.  Fingers crossed it goes my way!

A highlight was that I went back to the semester school I attended my junior year of high school, The School for Ethics and Global Leadership, for the first time since I finished the program.  For any of my younger readers, I HIGHLY recommend SEGL.  Here is the link to their website.  Definitely one of the best experiences of my life!

Here is a friend of mine who I went to program with and that I haven't seen in two years.  Great to see her again.

I really hope that I can get back to Washington DC as soon as I am done with school and live there for at least a couple of years.

I got back just in time for a crazy night!  The school threw a big party last night called Whiteout.  They put a giant tent on the quad in front of our dining hall and there was a ton of people dancing all night.  There was a DJ and a face painter and everyone had a great time.  It was a little chilly to just be wearing a tank top but definitely worth it.

First week back!

Finally got back to school!  I don't know about you, but it always takes me at least a week to adjust to my schedule again.  It was definitely a rough week trying to get use to everything again.  After sleeping in until 10 during spring break, 7:15 was early!

It was a really nice week to be back on campus.  The weather has finally started to improve thank goodness!  On Friday it was 55 degrees and a friend of mine and I decided to take sofa chairs onto the freshman quad and sit out there and bask in the sun.  If I was back home in California 55 degrees would be pants and sweatshirt weather, but here it was the best weather we have had in a long time.  I decided that Friday's were going to become "Tank-top Fridays".  So I put on my tank top and shorts and headed outside.  I sat outside and listened to music and wound down from a long week.  It was incredibly relaxing.  Definitely one of the most fun things I have done in a long time.

Cole and I hanging out on the quad.  (I promise that the weather is better then it looks)

I went into town wearing my outfit and I definitely got some strange looks!  I don't think that people in Amherst aren't use to seeing what people wear from Palos Verdes. It was pretty funny actually.

I think I enjoyed the sun a little too much because I realized later that night that I got more then a little sunburn.  Definitely not great for my skin.  Don't fret because it turned into a nice golden brown tan.  I decided that I should probably wear some sunscreen in the future though!

The weekend has been a lot of fun!  One of my good friends plays for the tennis team, and I was able to watch him crush his opponent this weekend.  Its amazing how good Amherst sports are.  Our men's basketball team is playing for the National Championship next Sunday, so I will definitely keep you updated on how they do!

Here are the highlights from their Final 4 win

I hope everyone's brackets are doing better then mine!  My roommate is about to win again.  He is unbelievable when it comes to picking this kind of stuff.

Wishing for warmer weather

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am definitely ready for warm weather!  I know that I said in my last entry that it was warming up, but this weekend it cooled down a lot and it ended up snowing on Sunday.  Let me tell you I can think of a couple of things that I would rather be doing instead of giving a tour in the snow!  I really wanted to curl up in bed and just watch a movie.  Does anyone have any movie suggestions?

I got a Netflix account a little while ago and I have been running thorough TV shows as fast as I possibly can.  I loved House of Cards and I am trying to get through How I Met You Mother right now.  House of Cards is unbelievable if you haven’t heard of it before.  It’s a gritty political drama that I can’t get enough of.  I’m looking for a new series to watch so any suggestions would be awesome.

I also had a big fundraiser for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program on Sunday that I am apart of.  My little and I had to raise money so we could participate in a bowl-a-thon.  It was a ton of fun.  I almost got out bowled by some of the littles, but we all laughed about it.  We got a little lost on the way there and on the way back, which was a little bit of a bummer but made the most of the extra time.

I’m definitely not alone in terms of being behind on some of my reading, but since I spent so much time studying for my Econ midterm last week I am beyond behind!  I still haven’t caught up in all of my reading for one of my classes and I have a test next week.  At least I have a little bit of time.

I am also very ready for a break from school.  Don’t get me wrong class can be really interesting, but I am exhausted.  We all know the feeling where you are just very run down mentally and physically and need a little bit of a break.

Workouts have also definitely taken a physical toll on me as well.  It has taken me a little while to get back into shape, but now that I am squatting a lot of weight tires out the legs!  I’ve put on 10 pounds which is a little weird for me considering as a freshman in high school I was 50 pounds lighter then I am right now.  It feels a little strange running with all of this weight, but I feel like I will be ready to go for next season.  Speaking of football, I was watching a friend in a lax scrimmage over the weekend and the new field and field house are coming along really nicely.  It is going to be so cool to be able to play on the new field next year. The strain from school and workouts are why I can’t wait to get home next week and sleep for a week straight and let my mind rest.  The warm weather won’t hurt either!

My dad called me the other day and said that it was a little chilly at home because it was in the low 70s.  I just chuckled and said it was warm outside and it was in the 40s.  Definitely looking forward to sunshine back home!

Standing in my way is a paper due Thursday for my Social Movements and Legal Transformations class on readings that are some of the most difficult readings I have ever done, a test in my history class Monday, and an in class essay test net Thursday.  Won’t be too bad.  Wish me luck!

Until next week.

Training hard so I can beat my friend Dylan, and the Williams College Ephs again next year!

Last push before Spring Break!

Why does it rain in March?!?  I got up at 6:15 to do conditioning, and by the time I finished it was already raining.  It’s been a pretty gloomy day.  One of those days where you just want to curl up next to a fire and watch a movie.  Couldn’t do that though!  It’s the last push before spring break so I have to crank out work before I can go home on Thursday!

One thing I will say is get sleep!  A friend came back from a couple of days away and my roommate Sam and I ended up staying up until 3 am talking.  Some of my other floor mates joined in too and it was a lot of fun, but when you have to get up early it makes the next day a very long one!  No matter what always get enough sleep!  As much as I wanted to go to sleep, our friend wouldn’t leave so that was a little tough.  Moral of the story, sometimes you need to prioritize sleep!

Last night was a lot of fun though.  After taking two naps I felt a lot better so I ended up going to our student center for some s’mores.  It was really nice to have some sweets after studying all afternoon.

I just have one more test before break, and hopefully I can do well on that and make the travel home easier.  It will be a little rush considering my test is over at 12:50 and my bus leaves for Boston at 1:05, so I am going to have to hustle over to the bus stop.  Speaking of the way home its kind of long!  It’s a 3.5 hour bus ride to Boston and then a 6.5 hour flight.  That’s a long travel day!  I won’t get back to my house until midnight most likely and then I have to get up early for a meeting with my boss for my summer internship.  Hopefully I will be sharp after such a long week!

Also tonight we are finding out who is playing for our spring concert.  I will be sure to let everyone know who it is!  Apparently UMASS is having 2 Chainz and Big Sean so I will definitely go to that.

Have a great rest of your week!

Thinking about home!  Can't wait for Spring break!!
