Peter and Myra Gooding—Four Decades at Amherst

"You may call me Peter, you may call me Sir, you may call me Professor, but do not call me Coach." -Peter Gooding

Peter and Myra Gooding

Peter and Myra Gooding arrived at Amherst College in 1968 when Peter was hired as men’s soccer coach, a job he held for a total of 32 seasons. Appointed Director of Athletics in 1976, Peter led the athletics program for 28 highly successful years. He will officially retire from Amherst College in 2008.

In addition to being the supportive wife of a hard-working coach—and a friend to those who played for him—Myra Gooding was a valued employee of Amherst College for many years, bringing extraordinary skill and creativity to her work with students and alumni.

Amherst College is proud to name its newest athletic field in honor of Peter Gooding, which was dedicated on September 29, 2007.

We invite alumni and members of the Amherst community to post their recollections and favorite stories about Peter and Myra.
