Encouraging Tech-Loving Students to “Unplug”

On April 8, Assistant Dean of Students Debra Krumholz and a committee of interested staff and students are encouraging students to voluntarily “disconnect” for 15 minutes, an hour, the afternoon or any part of the day and forgo cell phones, computers and other technological devices.

The Newest Name in Amherst Sciences

On April 1—five years after the facility officially opened—the college will host a dedication and naming ceremony for the Beneski Earth Sciences Building, which house the college’s geology department, and Beneski Museum of Natural History. The principal benefactors of the building are Ted ’78 and Laurie Beneski of Colleyville, Texas, who until now wished to remain anonymous.

As the devastation of Japan’s earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis continue to play out on the other side of the globe, geology professor Tekla Harms, who primarily studies mountain belts and the interactions of plate boundaries around the world, framed the scope of the tragedy.

They Are the Champions

The third time was indeed a charm for the Amherst women’s basketball team, which earned a 64-55 win over Washington University on Saturday to claim the first national title in program history. Watch the final moments of the game or read a summary of the exciting game. Also taking national athletics titles recently were Kendra Stern ’11, who was named National Swimmer of the Year after winning her 10th individual national title of her career; Jaci Daigneault ’11, who was awarded the NCAA Player of the Year in women’s basketball; and Ben Scheetz ’12, who earned the title of NCAA Division III National Men’s Athlete of the Year in indoor track and field.

JSTOR Now Open to Alumni

The Amherst College Library is pleased to announce that alumni are welcome to use JSTOR, an online scholarly database. The JSTOR subscription includes the digitized archives of hundreds of leading academic journals across the humanities, social sciences and sciences from the earliest issues up to a “moving wall” of a few years ago. PDFs are full-text searchable, and users can browse by journal title or discipline. Reference librarians are happy to answer questions about research or offer technical assistance.
