Antonis Samaras’ victory as the leader of Greece’s New Democracy conservative opposition party came just weeks after former Amherst roommate George Papandreou ’75 was elected the country’s prime minister. Stories about Samaras’ win and his relationship with Papandreou appeared in various national and international media outlets, including AthensPlus, a newsweekly published by The International Herald Tribune and Kathimerini SA.

Obama's Amherst Brain Trust Continues to Grow

The White House announced on Sept. 15 that Jeffrey Bleich ’83 is Obama’s pick for ambassador to Australia. Bleich, who has already served as special counsel to the commander-in-chief since March, would join the swelling ranks of alumni with high-profile positions in the administration.

Trustees Green-Light Lord Jeffery Inn Renovation Project

While reduced in scope from the plan initially proposed last fall, the current project involves renovating the historic inn’s 49 rooms and adding event space and an expanded restaurant. Construction is slated to begin this spring, with the goal of reopening the Inn in spring 2011.
