McCartney '75, Washington Post Staff, Win Pulitzer

When this year’s prestigious Pulitzer Prizes were announced April 7, Robert McCartney ’75, assistant managing editor for Metropolitan News of The Washington Post, had reason to celebrate: McCartney directly supervised coverage of the April 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech, for which the newspaper’s staff won a Pulitzer in the breaking-news reporting category.

Stiglitz '64, General Clark, Lead Campus Discussions

Admission Rate Hits All-Time Low of 14 Percent

In one of the most competitive admissions cycles ever, applications for Amherst’s Class of 2012 ballooned 17 percent while the college’s acceptance rate was down significantly from last year’s 18 percent.

Students' "Dream" Highlighted by Dallas Morning News

Dream for Democracy—an organization created by four Amherst first-years aimed at fostering conversation about government and democracy in South Africa—was featured in a lengthy piece in the The Dallas Morning News March 23. The article focused on Dream for Democracy’s work to launch a week-long conference teaching debate and other skills of democracy to high school students in South Africa this coming winter.

Hood Receives NSF CAREER Award

Biology professor Michael Hood has received a prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The five-year, $690,000 prize will enable Hood to continue his research on disease transmission and genomics—studies that may one day better explain how common illnesses function.

Temeles' Research Featured by Smithsonian

Scientists at the world-renowned Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History have chosen to feature the studies of Amherst College biology professor Ethan Temeles in an exhibition explaining co-adaptation in animals and plants. The exhibit, titled Butterflies + Plants: Partners in Evolution, is a permanent one and will likely remain in its current location for at least 20 years, according to the museum.
