All in the Family: Dorman '70 Named President of AUB

The board of trustees for the American University of Beirut (AUB) unanimously voted March 21 to elect Peter Dorman ’70, professor of Egyptology at the Oriental Institute and in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, the institution’s 15th president. Dorman follows in the footsteps of great-great-grandfather Daniel Bliss 1852, who founded the university and served as its president, and great-great-uncle Howard Bliss 1882, who also helmed AUB.

Olson '08, Sasser '08 Take Top Sports Honors

In the wake of the men’s basketball team’s loss to Washington University in St. Louis in the national division III title game, playmaker Andrew Olson ’08 had reason to be somewhat cheerful: He was subsequently recognized with the 2008 National Player of the Year award by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and named to the D3hoops.com All America First-Team for the second consecutive season. He isn’t the only Amherst athlete racking up the honors: swimmer Brittany Sasser ’08 was named one of 11 nominees for the Division III Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year by The Collegiate Women Sports Awards Program. "Quidditch," CBS News' Early Show Sweep into Campus

CBS News’ national morning program, The Early Show, invaded the main quad the morning of March 28 to broadcast live throughout the first-ever Amherst-Middlebury “Quidditch” match. The game, an earthbound version of the sport involving wizards and flying brooms made famous by the author J.K. Rowling in her popular Harry Potter novels, was also covered by the The Boston Globe, The Republican, The Daily Hampshire Gazette (registration required) and CBS 3 Springfield, among others.
